Why you need to keep tabs on Yunus Musah

Yunus Musah in his USA jersey

The 20 Year old American midfielder has had a season full of ups, but also a few downs. The Valencia midfielder committed to the USMNT in March of 2021, after also being eligible for the England national team. He was born in New York City, but moved to London at the age of nine years old. (Born in the same city in America, and lived in the same area in England as fellow Dual – Nat Balogun.) Musah just finished his third full season with Valencia, as well as a world cup with America, and the difference in level is shocking.

Musah "The Moose" with the USMNT

Yunus has been nothing short of fantastic since he made his debut for the US Men’s national team. When the team arrived at Qatar 2022, the midfield of Musah, Adams, and Mckennie, seemed to have Musah as the weakest link. What he did was prove why he not only isn’t the weakest, but could be the best. He played in dominating fashion just ahead of American captain Tyler Adams. Musah was the perfect player for the role that Greg Berhalter requested of him. He had a successful passes % of 83%, which show’s how well he took care of the ball. After having such a solid World Cup midseason, it seemed he was due for a big move away from Valencia.

Why isn't it clicking at Valencia?

Apart from the national team, it hasn’t been all the glory with his club team. He just finished his third full season with Valencia, and has 2 goals and 2 assists in 94 league games. He had the same amount of minutes from this season as he did the two seasons prior which shows good progress. In terms of passing, his mid range successful pass % increased by a whopping 10%! In some unfortunate news, his take on success rate almost halved to 38%, which it happened to be around during the World Cup too. He plays mainly as a central midfielder, but the club seem to play him out wide sometimes too. Musah ended the season getting subbed on in the 78′ minute, and getting a red card by the 81′ which will carry over to the start of next season. It has been a season too much, and it may be time for a move for Musah, especially if he wants to avoid being misused.

What to watch for from Musah?

Musah is currently part of the USMNT squad that just beat Mexico 3-0, and is looking towards playing Canada June 18th. He will be without Adams (Injury), and Mckennie (Suspension), so it will be a must watch to see how he does. In other news, there have been some rumours of him going to a few premier league clubs, but for now it looks like he will stay another season, so look out for La Liga on ESPN+.
